MOSCOW (Sputnik) - A state of emergency has been declared in the Belgorod Region, the regional governor, Vyacheslav Gladkov, said on Wednesday.
"The situation in our Belgorod region continues to be extremely difficult and tense. Daily shelling by the Ukrainian armed forces destroyed houses, wounded and killed civilians. Therefore, we are making a decision starting today throughout the Belgorod Region to declare a regional emergency with the aim of providing additional protection to the population and providing additional support to the victims, with a subsequent appeal to the government commission with a request to declare a federal emergency," Gladkov said on Telegram.
About 11,000 people have left the Krasnoyaruzhsky district of Russia’s Belgorod region due to the current situation, while about 1,000 people are currently in temporary accommodation, Gladkov said on Tuesday.
Last week, Ukrainian forces crossed the border into Russia and launched an offensive in the Kursk Region, capturing several villages. Russian President Vladimir Putin, commenting on the attack, said that Ukraine had undertaken another large-scale provocation and was firing indiscriminately at civilian targets as well.
