17:12 12.08.2024 (Updated: 18:34 12.08.2024) MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The Central African Republic (CAR) is planning to sign an agreement with Russia on military supplies and military education, CAR Defense Minister Claude Rameaux Bireau told Sputnik on Monday.
"I came here, among other things, to sign an agreement with the Russian government in the areas of military supplies, military education, as well as other areas," Bireau said, adding that he had already held talks with a number of Russian companies.
The
country is interested in Russian developments in the fields of artillery and military education, he added.
Meanwhile, there are no plans to discuss the construction of a Russian military
base during Bireau's visit to Russia, Russian Ambassador to CAR Alexander Bikantov told
Sputnik later in the day.
"The issues of building a Russian military base and increasing the number of domestic instructors are not planned for discussion," Bikantov said.
On April 19, CAR President Faustin Archange Touadera said that a Russian military base could be established in the eastern region of the country.
"The topic of creating a Russian military base in CAR continues to be part of the agenda for military cooperation negotiations between our two countries. However, this topic is not currently in an active phase. There is no substantive discussion regarding the timing and location of its establishment or the number of military personnel involved," the ambassador said.
