Cities across the United Kingdom have been rocked by riots in the wake of a July 29 stabbing attack on children by a teenager whose family was wrongly suspected of being of immigrant origin. The misinformation that the alleged perpetrator, 17-year-old Axel Muganwa Rudakubana, was a migrant was later widely debunked.
Following a wave of violent riots targeting
migrants across multiple British cities, several African nations have issued travel alerts to their citizens in the UK.
The Tanzanian High Commission in the UK has advised Tanzanians living in the country to avoid potentially dangerous areas, urging them to stay safe and seek assistance from the High Commission if needed.
"We advise those who are here to stay away from these areas and where possible seek assistance from the High Commission," said Tanzania’s High Commissioner to the UK, Mbelwa Kairuki.
Tanzania is not alone in its concern. Nigeria and Kenya have also issued similar
travel advisories to their nationals.
The riots, fueled by misinformation spread on social media, falsely blamed Muslim migrants for the deaths of three young girls in Southport. The alleged perpetrator, 17-year-old Axel Muganwa Rudakubana, is not a migrant, and the misinformation has been widely debunked.
The violent demonstrations have targeted mosques and hotels housing asylum seekers in various cities. Police officials have noted a potential paramilitary link to the riots and have deployed over 6,000 officers to manage the situation. Over 400 people have been arrested so far.
