The International Festival of African Peoples Culture, "AFROFEST," is organized to expand cultural horizons and destroy stereotypes and views that have been formed for many years. The goal of the event is to introduce Russian citizens to the history, customs, and traditions of Africa.
From August 2 to 4, the AFROFEST festival was held in Moscow. Sputnik Africa talked to the participants of this festival.
When discussing the importance of African culture, many respondents spoke of the vibrant colors, clothing, delicious food, and dancing. However, they also spoke of the spirituality, family traditions, and community that characterize the continent.

"And for me, the first word that comes to mind when you ask me about Africa is freedom. This mental freedom, even freedom from time, if you know what I’m talking about. It's also unity: in Africa, everybody is like one big family, no matter what country you're from. [...] And the third thing is, of course, confidence—knowing who you are, where you're from, knowing your ancestors, knowing your culture, and being proud of it," said one festival participant.

All respondents noted good relations between Russia and the continent, in particular due to the education of Africans in Russia, noting the openness of both sides to interaction.
"All people are close to each other despite their skin color, despite different languages. Everyone can find common ground with each other," another participant said.
The festival was held with the support of the Moscow Department of Culture and the embassies of African countries in Russia.
