On Wednesday, the Palestinian movement Hamas confirmed the death of its politburo chief Ismail Haniyeh as a result of an Israeli strike on his residence in the Iranian capital. According to the movement, Haniyeh was killed in an Israeli "raid" at his residence in Tehran after his participation in the inauguration of the new president of Iran.
Somalia has strongly condemned the
assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, the head of Hamas' political bureau, in Tehran, Iran. The Foreign Ministry labeled the incident a violation of international law, expressing deep concern over the escalating violence in the region.
"Somalia fears an escalating pace of violence that could lead to more violations against civilians," the ministry said in a statement, expressing the country's "heartfelt condolences" to the Palestinian people.
While Hamas has blamed Israel for the attack, which occurred overnight in Tehran while Haniyeh was attending the inauguration of Iran's new president, Israel has neither claimed nor denied responsibility.
The Somali foreign ministry's statement called for the international community to "bear its responsibilities and take immediate action to stop the Israeli aggression on Gaza and its violations of international law and UN resolutions."
The attack on Haniyeh follows Israel's ongoing offensive in Gaza, which has resulted in the deaths of nearly 40,000 Palestinian civilians, primarily women and children, according to Gazan health authorities. The conflict has left much of Gaza in ruins and sparked widespread international condemnation.
