In this episode of AfroVerdict, Viktor Anokhin joins two experts from the Second Russia-Africa Conference, hosted by Tanzania, to discuss the role of multipolarity in Russia-Africa relations. Likewise, South Africa's new Deputy Minister of Trade reveals the country's trade priorities and opportunities.
The first part of the episode features an interview with South Africa's Deputy Minister of the Department of Trade, Industry, and Competition (DTIC), Zuko Godlimpi, from the sidelines of the 14th BRICS Trade Ministers' Meeting from July 24-26.
The DTIC will focus on increasing South Africa's "products in the Russian market and across the entire BRICS framework", according to Godlimpi. This will be done to "build alternative markets" for the sake of the country's "long-term economic growth."
In addition to market expansion, DTIC also expresses interest in "processing and building technology capabilities in Africa" by assisting local companies and businesses.

"The company you are mentioning [Hala Energy], those are some of the lodestars that we want to assist as much as we can and to help them expand their capabilities, their output, and to build global partnerships together with them so that they could have a sustainable linkage in global value chains," the Deputy Minister explains.

Second Valdai Russia-Africa Conference

On July 24, Dar es Salaam hosted the Second Russia-Africa Conference organized by the Valdai Discussion Club, the main theme of which was multipolarity in Russia-Africa relations.
Many African countries embrace multipolarity due to the fact that it is "very close to the African spirit," according to Maya Nikolskaya, researcher at the MGIMO Institute of International Studies (IMI) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia.

"If you come to think of the big philosophical ideas that have shaped the 20th and 21st centuries, Africa, I'm talking specifically about things like Ubuntu, like Ujamaa, African socialism, you will see that all of them are actually based on some degree of multipolarity when you talk about the collective spirit," she explains.

This view is supported by Mikatekiso Kubayi, researcher at the Institute for Pan African Thought and Conversation, who believes Africa "wants fairness."
"That is what the whole momentum is about from the global South – fairness. Democratize the international system, accommodate African voices, accommodate global South voices, accommodate all voices fairly. Make it more representative of the new reality of the globe," Mr. Kubayi says.
