Since it began on April 15, 2023, the conflict in Sudan between the army and the Rapid Support Forces, led by former Sovereign Council deputy chairman Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo, has reportedly resulted in the killing of over 15,000 civilians, the displacement of 10 million, and fueled waves of ethnically motivated violence largely blamed on the RSF.
A "suicide bomber drone" targeted Chairman of Sudan's Sovereignty Council
Abdel Fattah al-Burhan on Wednesday morning while he was attending a graduation ceremony for military academy students at the Gebeit Military Institute in the Red Sea state of eastern Sudan, local media reported.
The Sudanese army said in a statement that air defenses intercepted two hostile drones targeting the venue of the ceremony in the city of Gebeit.
"Today, our ground anti-aircraft units intercepted two enemy missiles that targeted the site of the graduation ceremony of the military, aeronautical and naval colleges in Gebeit," the Sudanese Armed Forces said in a statement. "The incident resulted in the deaths of five martyrs and minor injuries that are currently being counted."
The media added that the Sudanese leader was unharmed and was taken to Port Sudan, the country's temporary capital.
The attack comes against the backdrop of the
ongoing conflict between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since April 2023.
