WASHINGTON (Sputnik) - The United States is providing Ukraine with a new $200 million security assistance package that includes additional munitions for the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS), javelin missiles, and air defense interceptors, White House National Security Communications Adviser John Kirby said on Monday.
"The Biden-Harris administration is announcing new security assistance to meet Ukraine's critical security and defense needs," Kirby said. "This includes a presidential drawdown authority package to provide Ukraine with key capabilities for the fight that they're in, including air defense interceptors, Munitions for US-provided HIMARS, artillery and mortar rounds, javelin anti-tank missiles and other anti-tank weapons."
Kirby later noted that the latest military aid package is worth $200 million.
On June 4, 2023, Ukraine attempted a counteroffensive against Russia. Kiev deployed brigades trained by NATO instructors and armed with Western equipment, including Leopard and Challenger tanks. Three months later, Russian President Vladimir Putin declared that Kiev's push had failed, with Ukraine suffering heavy casualties. Several Western officials have also admitted that the Ukrainian counteroffensive had not been successful.
