Innovating Inclusivity: Story Behind U-Signup App
In a groundbreaking move to bridge communication gaps for the deaf community, the Ugandan Association of the Deaf has developed the U-Signup app. This innovative tool is set to transform accessibility and inclusivity by providing a seamless platform for sign language interpretation and vital services.
Faced with various societal challenges, deaf individuals established the Ugandan National Association of the Deaf [UNAD] to advocate for their rights and access to services, with the aim of ensuring dignity for every deaf person in Uganda, Robert Nkwangu, Executive Director, Uganda National Association of the Deaf tells Global South Pole.
The Ugandan further explains that UNAD sought to harness the power of digital technology to make sign language more widely available and easier to learn, hence inspiring the creation of the U-signup app.
“As of recently, the world has embraced technology, and through that, people using computers and smartphones, and because of the language evolution, we decided to formulate the U-Sign app. It's a digital app, and we're aiming that digitalizing sign language [that] would have a [wider] coverage, such that many people out there can access sign language knowledge through their phones that they're using; they can learn the few basics of sign language, even without reaching them face-to-face,” Nkwangu stresses.
