Tanzania's President Reshuffles Cabinet, Fires Information & Foreign Affairs Ministers

Samia Suluhu Hassan became Tanzania's sixth president in 2021. Since then, she has reshuffled cabinet ministers three times, adjusted the intelligence chief's role to serve as a national security advisor, created the post of deputy prime minister in 2023, and implemented economic and political reforms.
President Hassan has fired the Minister of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, January Makamba, and the Minister of Information, Communication, and Information Technology, Nape Nnauye, the presidency announced on Sunday.
According to the statement, Mahmoud Thabit Kombo has been appointed a Member of Parliament and Minister of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation. Kombo served as Tanzania's ambassador to Italy prior to this cabinet reshuffle.
The new Minister of Information, Communication, and Information Technology will be Jerry Silaa, who was previously the Minister of Housing, Human Settlements' Development, and Lands.
Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation Mabrouk Nassor Mabrouk has been replaced by Cosatto Chumi.
According to the statement, Mabrouk will be assigned other responsibilities following his resignation on Sunday. In his resignation letter to parliament, he cited social challenges as the reason for his decision.
Dennis Lazaro Londa has been appointed as the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, succeeding Stephen Lujwahuka Byabato.
Ridhiwani Kikwete has been designated as a Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office. Kikwete previously served as Deputy Minister of State in the Office of the President for Public Service Management and Good Governance.
Deus Clement Sangu has been appointed as the Deputy Minister in the President's Office for Public Service Management and Good Governance.
Eliakim Chacha Maswi has been appointed as the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Constitutional and Legal Affairs, and Mary Gaspar Makondo has been appointed as the Regional Administrative Secretary for the Ruvuma region in the southern part of Tanzania.
Additionally, the reshuffle includes the appointment of district administrators and permanent secretaries.
Hassan is currently serving out the reminder of former President John Magufuli's second five-year term, which ends in 2025, in accordance with the constitution.
Back in 2020, the presidential election was won by incumbent Magufuli, with 84.40% of votes, with Samia Suluhu Hassan as the vice presidential candidate. After Magufuli's sudden death in March 2021, Hassan took the highest office herself.
Before entering politics in 2000 in her native Zanzibar, a semi-autonomous archipelago, Hassan began her career as an office secretary and development worker. She was subsequently elected to the national assembly in mainland Tanzania and was assigned a senior ministry position. Hassan was chosen by Magufuli to serve as his running mate in the 2015 presidential election campaign after consistently ascending the ranks of the governing Chama Cha Mapinduzi party.
