According to the Washignton Declaration at the 33rd NATO Summit held on 9-11 July, the defense bloc intends to expand its military presence in Africa. AfroVerdict host joins a security studies expert from Uganda to analyse the implications of NATO's move for stability on the continent.
Representatives from Africa were nowhere to be seen among the list of attendees to discuss NATO's future plans, which is an indicator of "the silenced voices of the African voices within the international system," according to Dr. Anne Abaho, senior lecturer in international relations and security studies at Nkumba University, Uganda.Dr. Abaho ponders whether NATO's military presence is truly what Africa needs, considering the "historical legacies" that have come as a result of "colonial administration, conflict, and mismanagement of the state."In the latter section of the episode, Amb. "You have this strong "white master thinks on behalf of the black inferior, kind of slave, non-human, less human," the expert highlights.
Dr. Abaho ponders whether NATO's military presence is truly what Africa needs, considering the "historical legacies" that have come as a result of "colonial administration, conflict, and mismanagement of the state."
"So the placement of these NATO soldiers into Africa can be appreciated from a series of angles, including the taking advantage of the economic capacity of the continent. It won't be surprising that amongst the victims are countries which are endowed with resources," she explains.
