MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Russia exported a record 55.3 million tonnes of wheat in the 2023-2024 agricultural season, which accounts for 26.1% of global exports, an analysis of the International Grains Council's data conducted by Sputnik showed on Friday.
Russia's export volume reached the highest figure in modern history and jumped by 15% year-on-year.
Global wheat exports in the last agricultural year stood at 211.7 million tonnes, against 208.7 million year-on-year. The European Union was the second-largest wheat exporter after Russia, with the bloc's supplies increasing by 0.7% to 35.3 million tonnes. Canada came in third as its wheat exports decreased by 3% over the same period to 25 million tonnes.
In late June, Russian Agriculture Minister Oksana Lut said that the department expected record exports of wheat, sunflower oil and soybean oil by the end of the current agricultural season. Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin has said that Russia planned to ramp up agricultural production by 25% and exports by 50% by 2030.
