MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Voters in Rwanda will go to the polls on Monday to elect a new president and members of the lower house of parliament.
The main candidate for the presidency is long-standing incumbent Paul Kagame, who represents the ruling Rwandan Patriotic Front and is now running for a fourth term in office.
Kagame will be challenged by two rivals: Frank Habineza from the liberal Democratic Green Party and independent presidential candidate Philippe Mpayimana.
Under Rwanda's law, the president is elected for a term of five years and for no more than two consecutive terms.

President Paul Kagame has held the eastern African country's top job since April 2000.
A referendum was held in 2015 to "reset" his term and allow the 66-year-old to take office for a third time in a row, with the right to be elected two more times for a combined term that ends in 2034.
