UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) - The UN Security Council has extended the mandate of the United Nations' Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH) until July 15, 2025, a Sputnik correspondent reported from the scene on Friday.
The UN Security Council approved the draft unanimously, expressing concern over the high level of crime in Haiti. BINUH plays a part in assisting the local authorities in tackling the danger posed by gangs, in addition to its other duties.
The resolution said it reaffirms support for the effective implementation of BINUH’s mandate and encourages the mission while maintaining its focus on supporting a Haitian-led and Haitian-owned political process toward holding free and fair elections.
The resolution also expresses support for the Haitian National Police, including providing training on anti-gang tactics and human rights compliance.
On February 29, gang violence erupted in Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince. The gangs said their goal was to prevent the country’s prime minister from returning to Haiti, and they took control over parts of the city. The gangs also stormed Haiti's largest prison and freed an unspecified number of inmates. Following the events, the Haitian government declared a state of emergency in the capital region.
