Last month, sources told AFP that France is planning to reduce its military presence in West and Central Africa to around 600 troops, in line with President Emmanuel Macron's plans to limit the French military footprint in the region.
Burkina Faso's leader, Ibrahim Traore, stated on Thursday that he has proof of a deliberate effort by France, with the backing of Benin and Cote d'Ivoire, to destabilize his nation.

"We have nothing against the Ivorian people. But we do have something against those who run Cote d'Ivoire. We say it, and we'll say it again. There is indeed a center of operations in Abidjan to destabilize our country," he said in his address to the nation.

Moreover, Burkina Faso has evidence that two French bases are located in Benin, directed against the West African country.

"We have proof. Tracks have been laid; soldiers are equipped," Traore underlined.

However, the French military has officially refuted the presence of military bases in Benin in a comment given to the Turkish state media outlet Anadolu Ajansı.
Aside from that, the Burkinabe leader announced that his country will withdraw mining permits from companies in countries that refuse to sell military equipment.
“It’s going to stop. We are going to withdraw operating permits. You cannot exploit our resources and refuse to sell us equipment. We are going to exploit [them] ourselves,” he declared to the cheers of the crowd, without specifying which states he was warning.
Burkina Faso has extensive mineral resources, including gold, zinc, copper, manganese, phosphate, and limestone. Last month, African Metallurgical and Mining Group launched exploration work in Dan village, a promising area of the country.
Furthermore, Minister of Energy, Mines, and Quarries Yacouba Zabre Gouba told Sputnik Africa in March that Burkina Faso is open to Russian investors interested in mining gold and other minerals.
