NATO will establish a special representative for the Middle East and Africa to help promote stability in the region, the alliance said in a joint declaration on Wednesday. NATO’s southern neighborhood provides opportunities for cooperation on issues of mutual interest, and through its partnerships, the alliance aims to foster greater security and stability in the Middle East and Africa, the statement added. WASHINGTON (Sputnik) - The 2024 Washington Summit is being held in the US capital on July 9-11 and brings together leaders and representatives from various countries to discuss key global issues and foster international cooperation.

NATO will establish a special representative for the Middle East and Africa to help promote stability in the region, the alliance said in a joint declaration on Wednesday.

"We have invited the Secretary-General to designate a Special Representative for the southern neighborhood who will serve as NATO’s focal point for the region and will coordinate NATO’s efforts," NATO said in its Washington Summit declaration.

NATO’s southern neighborhood provides opportunities for cooperation on issues of mutual interest, and through its partnerships, the alliance aims to foster greater security and stability in the Middle East and Africa, the statement added.

As a result of this effort, NATO members have agreed to open a NATO liaison office in Amman, Jordan, according to the statement.
