MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Kenya's opposition Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party has called on Kenyan President William Ruto to sign into law a bill envisaging snap elections amid ongoing protests against tax hikes, the leader of the Wiper Democratic Movement that forms part of Azimio, Kalonzo Musyoka, said.
The coalition led by Wiper Democratic Movement leader Kalonzo Musyoka has said President William Ruto should call for a snap election.

"The Kenyans have already expressed the lack of confidence in this government and we urge President Ruto to assent the bill into law to allow the Kenyans to express their democratic rights," Musyoka was quoted as saying by the Nation newspaper.

Protests have been taking place across Kenya since mid-June, when authorities unveiled a bill imposing a 16% VAT rate on bread, sugar transportation, mobile and financial services, and foreign currency transactions, as well as a 2.5% excise tax on cars and vegetable oil. As protests ignited, Ruto refused to sign the bill and sent it back to parliament for reconsideration.
