Zimbabwe's Lithium: Powering Africa's Future
Africa's vast lithium reserves are poised to become a cornerstone of the global green energy revolution. As demand for lithium-ion batteries surges, countries like Zimbabwe are emerging as key players in the market. But realizing this potential requires investment and sustainable practices to ensure long-term benefits for the continent.
Zimbabwe possesses one of the largest reserves of lithium in the world, and its significance for the Zimbabwean economy cannot be overstated, Samir Bhattacharya, an associate fellow at the Observer Research Foundation, India, tells Global South Pole.
"Zimbabwe has the world's fifth-largest reserves of lithium. In 2021, an output of 1200 tons of lithium was recorded in the country. And it is said to become Zimbabwe's third-biggest mineral export after the gold and platinum groups of metals. So, the importance of lithium for Zimbabwe's economy is immense," Bhattacharya says.
