10:54 29.06.2024 (Updated: 16:44 01.07.2024) Mauritania's outgoing president, Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, became head of state in 2019 after the first transition of power between the country's two elected presidents since independence.
More than 1.9 million voters are expected to go to the polls in the presidential election in
Mauritania this Saturday.
There are seven candidates in the race, namely:
Outgoing President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani (Union for the Republic);
Mohamed Lemine El Mourtaja El Wavi (independent candidate);
Hamadi Sidi El Mokhtar Mohamed Abdi (president of the National Rally for Reform and Development, also known as Tawassoul);
Otouma Antoine Souleimane Soumaré (independent candidate);
Mamadou Bocar Bâ (president of the Alliance for Justice and Democracy);
El-Id Mohameden M’Bareck (deputy);
Biram Dah Abeid (human rights activist).
