Sexual Violence in Africa's Conflict Zones: 'Western Double Standards Are Sickening'
20:28 21.06.2024 (Updated: 10:16 12.07.2024) Sexual violence in African conflict zones remains a devastating issue, with numerous reports from affected countries. Despite international efforts, allegations against local and international forces, including British, French, and American troops, highlight the ongoing need for justice and accountability.
The issue of sexual violence in conflicts is an important topic of discussion as it raises awareness in the struggle to protect victims, James Mwangi, Founder, African Center for Corrective and Preventive Action, Nairobi, Kenya, tells Global South Pole.
"We must stand in solidarity with these victims and survivors, push for their issues more at all levels of policymaking, at legislative levels, so that we can achieve global awareness and that awakening that is required to bring to end these horrendous, horrific issues that are related to sexual violence," he explains.
Commenting on the atrocities committed by Western troops, Mwangi asked, “How did these troops find themselves here?”
"These troops, they just upgraded from the colonial army to now Republican armies in African countries. Like in Kenya, we had a colonial army that was British, but they never left. They just turned into the British army […]. Atrocities that were committed by some of these visiting forces then are still being committed today in Africa," he stresses.
