HANOI (Sputnik) - Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in Vietnam on a two-day state visit on Wednesday.
The plane with the Russian leader aboard landed at Hanoi International Airport, a Sputnik correspondent reported.
The Il-96 aircraft carrying the Russian leader, which departed from Pyongyang, landed at Noi Bai Airport in Hanoi.
A red carpet was rolled out by the plane’s steps, and a guard of honor was assembled. Putin was greeted by Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha, Head of the Central Committee for International Affairs Le Hoai Trung, and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Le Thi Thu Hang. Tran Hong Ha and Le Thi Thu Hang are fluent in Russian.
Putin arrived at the Presidential Palace the day after his arrival in his Aurus limousine and was welcomed by the President of the Republic, To Lam.
The leaders embraced warmly and walked up the red carpet to the palace entrance. Young residents of Hanoi holding Russian and Vietnamese flags welcomed the head of the Russian state.
The orchestra, assembled in the square, played the national anthems of both countries, and several parade formations of the Vietnamese military marched in front of the presidents.
After greeting the members of the Russian and Vietnamese delegations, the leaders proceeded into the palace for Russian-Vietnamese talks. During the ceremony, portraits of Putin and To Lam, along with the flags of Russia and Vietnam, were displayed on a large screen in the square.
The Presidential Palace in Hanoi is the official residence of the head of the Vietnamese state. The four-story building was constructed in the early 20th century in the Italian Neorenaissance style, characterized by separate pediments, a grand staircase, and classical columns.
Before Vietnam gained independence, the palace served as the residence of the Governor-General of Indochina. Also on the grounds is a two-story wooden house where Ho Chi Minh lived from 1958 to 1969.
