WASHINGTON (Sputnik) – On April 15, 2023, clashes broke out between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. The parties to the conflict have since introduced a number of temporary nationwide ceasefires, but none have helped settle the conflict.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken discussed the “urgent need for collective international action to end the war in Sudan” with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, the US State Department said on Monday.
“They discussed the urgent need for collective international action to end the war in Sudan and prevent famine and further atrocities in what is the world's largest humanitarian crisis,” the statement said.
In addition, Blinken expressed his concerns regarding the recent Houthi detentions of UN, diplomatic, and NGO staff, as well as the group’s continued attacks in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.
They also discussed issues regarding Israel's war on Gaza, including reaching an “enduring” ceasefire, securing the release of hostages, surging humanitarian assistance, and coordinating post-war plans, the statement added.
