West Africa continues to be a significant transit area for cocaine, and drug trafficking provides financial support to numerous armed groups in the Sahel, according to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). In mid-April, the customs authorities in Senegal seized an unprecedented amount of cocaine, weighing 1,137.6 kilograms.
At least 108.7 kilograms of pure cocaine have been seized in southern Senegal, a record amount for the region, the West African country’s General Directorate of Customs announced on its website.
The shipment, worth an estimated 8.7 billion CFA francs (about $14.2 million), was discovered on June 13 by the Kalifourou Customs Commercial Brigade, which was created in March 2024.

"It all started with the targeting of a Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicle coming from a neighboring country and driven by an individual from a Sahel country," the customs directorate said.

The cocaine, in 95 packages, was hidden in a stash in the back of the vehicle, it added. "The drug seized was certified as pure cocaine by the Technical and Scientific Laboratory of the National Police."
The driver, who was carrying a large sum of money in foreign currency, was arrested.

"An investigation is underway to dismantle the network behind this trafficking operation," noted the agency.
