Earlier, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed described his country's entry into BRICS as "one of the biggest diplomatic victories in the last few decades." Ethiopia with Iran, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Egypt became full members of the BRICS on January 1, 2024.
Ethiopian Foreign Minister Taye Atske Selassie eloquently expressed the nation's appreciation for its membership in the BRICS alliance at the BRICS Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Russia's city of Nizhny Novgorod from June 10-11, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' statement.
Foreign Minister Taye emphasized Ethiopia's dedication to its active role within the BRICS, aligning it with the country's national development goals. According to the ministry, he underscored the various initiatives Ethiopia has undertaken to strengthen its participation in the BRICS family.
Additionally, Taye addressed the need for renewed global partnerships to tackle pressing transnational issues. He advocated for collective solutions founded on effective multilateralism and emphasized the necessity of prioritizing development on the global agenda.
Stressing the importance of reforming multilateral institutions and increasing development financing and debt relief, the top diplomat highlighted the importance of these steps in addressing the legitimate interests of developing countries.
The minister also reiterated Ethiopia's commitment to the collective pursuit of peace, inclusive and sustainable development, and effective multilateralism.
