MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Incumbent European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said that she is confident of her re-election for another term as head of the European Commission. She also added that she will work in the European Parliament with those who share common goals.
Von der Leyen is supported by the European People's Party, which is currently leading in the European Parliament elections.
The head of the party, Manfred Weber, said that the voting results confirmed that the current European Commission chief should be reappointed and called on other factions to shore up their support for her.
"As we have won the election, we can call on the other political factions to support von der Leyen for the second term as the European Commission head," Weber wrote on X.
The preliminary data indicated that the European People's Party would secure 184 mandates in the 720-seat parliament. To be reelected, von der Leyen needs to garner the support of 361 lawmakers.

Belgian Prime Minister Admits Defeat of His Party in Elections

Following the elections, Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo said that his Open Flemish Liberals and Democrats party has lost in his country and called for a new government to be formed as soon as possible.
"This is an extremely difficult evening for us. We have lost these elections. This is not the result we expected. I am responsible for this. I will concentrate on current affairs until my successor is appointed. I am sure that we need a new government as soon as possible," De Croo said at a conference in Brussels on Sunday.
The Open Vld party does not plan to participate in the formation of the future government and will go into opposition, party leader Tom Ongena said.
The Flemish nationalist party Vlaams Belang and the New Flemish Alliance are leading in the elections to the Belgian federal parliament and will receive 20 and 24 seats, respectively, in the 150-seat legislative assembly. Open Vld will receive only 7 seats.
