WASHINGTON (Sputnik) - Retired US Navy Adm. Robert Burke, who oversaw operations in Europe, Russia, and Africa, has been arrested for his alleged involvement in a bribery scheme from 2020 to 2022, the Justice Department said on Friday.
"As alleged in an indictment unsealed today, from 2020 to 2022, Robert Burke, 62, of Coconut Creek, Florida, was a four-star admiral who oversaw Naval operations in Europe, Russia and most of Africa and commanded thousands of civilian and military personnel," the Justice Department said in a statement.
Prosecutors claimed that Adm. Robert Burke, who held the position of vice commander of naval operations until 2022, might spend up to 30 years in jail if found guilty of bribery.
The second-highest ranking officer in the US Navy, when he retired, Burke is accused of bribery and conspiracy of bribery, as well as participating in activities that effect a personal financial interest and withholding material facts from the United States.
