China Explains Why it Won't Attend Swiss Conference on Ukraine
12:36 31.05.2024 (Updated: 13:03 31.05.2024) Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the Ukraine Peace Forum in Switzerland is an attempt to impose conditions on Moscow; it will fail, as will the attempt to inflict a strategic defeat on Russia.
China will not attend the
Swiss conference on Ukraine because it does not meet Beijing's conditions due to the absence of Russia, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said.
"China has always insisted that an international peace conference should be endorsed by both Russia and Ukraine, with the equal participation of all parties, and that all peace proposals should be discussed in a fair and equal manner. Otherwise, it will be difficult for it to play a substantive role in restoring peace," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning noted.
Beijing added that it will continue to promote the peace talks by maintaining engagement with all sides.
Putin noted earlier that the conference is an attempt to set terms for Moscow, but it
won't succeed, just as any effort to inflict a strategic defeat on Russia will fail. He added that Russia will not discuss formulas about which it knows nothing, but Moscow has never refused negotiations on Ukraine; there is a basis for the negotiation process - the Istanbul agreements of 2022.
