In early May, UN Special Representative for Libya Abdoulaye Bathily told Sputnik that Libyan officials are worried about reports of certain countries trying to permanently settle migrants and refugees in certain areas of the North African country.
Efforts to settle migrants on the territory of Libya are met with negative attitude, Libyan Minister of State for Illegal Migration, Fathi al-Tabawi, told Sputnik.
Al-Tabawi added that "this is a Libyan national security issue, whether the resettlement is direct or implicit, by returning some immigrants from European countries to Libya."

He also said that the Libyan government is "trying to eliminate the camps in areas under the control of the Libyan parliament," adding that "today we are looking for sustainable solutions to migration with the European side."

"Libya is not only a crossing country but also a destination country. There are some from neighboring countries who have been displaced to Libya and are not looking to cross to the other side, but rather are interested in making a living and staying safe," the minister noted.

The African-European Conference on Migration was held in the Libyan city of Benghazi on May 25-27. According to the minister, the conference sought to find "unified legislation on the immigration file" with various parties from Africa and Europe.
