In mid-April, the Posts and Telecommunications Authority of Zimbabwe asked Starlink, the internet satellite service owned by American billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, to disable all kits operating illegally in the country until they are licensed, according to the authority's chief, Gift Machengete.
The telecommunications regulatory authority of Zimbabwe granted approval for the licensing of Starlink, permitting it to operate in the country, President Emmerson Mnangagwa
said on Saturday.
"The entry by Starlink in the digital telecommunications space in Zimbabwe is expected to result in the deployment of high speed, low cost, LEO [low-Earth-orbit] internet infrastructure throughout Zimbabwe and particularly in all the rural areas. This will be in fulfillment of my Administration’s undertaking to leave no one and no place behind," he wrote on X.
According to the president, Starlink will offer its services only through its local partner, IMC Communications.
The latest figures from the World Bank
showed that in 2021, the internet was accessible to 35% — just over a third — of Zimbabwe's population.
The licensing of Starlink comes amidst a government crackdown on those who illegally import Starlink kits from neighboring countries such as Zambia without proper registration.
Last month,
Cameroon reportedly issued an order to confiscate Starlink equipment at the country’s ports of entry due to the provider’s lack of licensing.
In December of last year, Ghana's National Communications Authority
stated that Starlink was operating illegally in the country, as it had neither licensed Starlink to operate in Ghana nor type-approved any of their equipment.
