"The International Court of Justice's order underlines the gravity of the situation facing Palestinians in Gaza. This decision opens up the possibility for relief, but only if governments use their leverage to press Israel to urgently and force the court's measures," Balkees Jarrah, the associate international justice director at Human Rights Watch, said in a statement published on X. Earlier in the day, ICJ President Nawaf Salam said that Israel must stop its military operation in the city of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip. It also must ensure unimpeded access to the enclave for the missions that are investigating the allegations of genocide, the judge added. Despite the UN court's binding orders, the Israeli government continues to block the entry of humanitarian aid to the enclave, the organization said. Israel sent troops into Rafah on May 7, seven months after an attack by Palestinian movement Hamas on Israeli territory unleashed the worst escalation of conflict in the Gaza Strip in decades. Israel's war cabinet is determined to expand the operation in Rafah until it accomplished its declared goal of eliminating all Hamas fighters.
