'Africa Remembers' While West Pretends Atrocities of Colonialism Never Happened, Russian MFA Says
Africa Day, observed each year on May 25, commemorates the establishment of the Organization of African Unity in 1963, which is now called the African Union. This day is a lively celebration of Africa's cultural wealth, historical milestones, and continuous pursuit of unity and progress.
The Russian Foreign Ministry
congratulated Africa on Africa Day, highlighting its "long and arduous journey" in the fight for independence and self-determination.
African countries remember that Western powers were the main cause of their suffering, the Russian Foreign Ministry stated on its Telegram channel on the
occasion.
"The West is trying to pretend that the suffering endured by many generations of Africans—racism, the slave trade, killings, and punitive operations—has nothing to do with them," the ministry
said. "But Africa remembers."
Moreover, the West continues to exploit African nations, "extracting resources and counting corporate profits" while also trying to hide their "own bleak past."
"Historical falsification is not only about attempts to rewrite the causes, course, and outcomes of the Second World War, but also about a cynical, covert campaign to silence the horrors of the colonial era," the ministry said.
The Russian ministry
emphasized that since the Soviet era, Russia has actively supported African states in their struggle for independence from colonizers, helping "to stabilize 37 African economies as a result."
"Soviet military advisers and specialists served in Angola, Ethiopia, Egypt, Mozambique, and other African countries at various times," the statement read, adding that today, the Russian foreign policy emphasizes the development of multilateral cooperation with the states of the African continent.
