The Congolese army announced on Sunday that it had thwarted a coup attempt in Kinshasa, the country's capital, and detained those responsible. Reports from both Western and local media indicated that US and UK citizens were among the attackers.
The Southern African Development Community (SADC) has condemned the coup attempt in Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The organization expressed its strong disapproval in a statement posted on its social media account.

"The Southern African Development Community condemns in its strongest terms the attempted coup d`état that happened on 19 May 2024 in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, after gunmen tried to attack the homes of senior officials of the DRC government including that of President Félix Tshisekedi," statement reads.

Earlier, the chairman of the African Union (AU) Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, also expressed condemnation of the attempt, the AU said in a statement issued on Sunday.
The coup attempt took place on May 19, when armed men attacked the homes of government members and President Felix Tshisekedi. Videos circulated on social media showing armed men in the presidential palace, stating their intention to remove President Tshisekedi from power.

The incident resulted in the deaths of three people, including two police officers, according to the local media reports.
