Russia to Host BRICS Extreme Sports Festival in Early June
11:51 17.05.2024 (Updated: 17:17 17.05.2024) The Grand Skate Tour rollerblading and skateboarding festival has been taking place since 2021. This year, the sporting event will be special and will be held in Russia's Nizhny Novgorod — the city that hosted the first ever continental championship under the auspices of the international federation World Skate in 2019.
BRICS Skate Cup by
Grand Skate Tour — featuring competitions in skateboarding, scootering, and roller sports — will be held in Nizhny Novgorod among professional athletes from countries that are BRICS members or want to join the bloc at the beginning of June. The festival will be held in honor of the meeting of the BRICS Foreign Ministers.
Athletes from more than 20 countries will take part in the tournament, including Azerbaijan, Argentina, Bahrain, Belarus, Brazil,
Zimbabwe,
Egypt, India, Iran, Kazakhstan,
China, Colombia, Cuba, Lebanon, UAE, Russia, Saudi Arabia,
Senegal, Thailand, Turkey,
Uganda,
South Africa,
Ethiopia.
The purpose of the festival, as stated by the president of the Russian Skateboarding Federation (the main organizer of the festival), is to
unite fans of these sports.
“Against the background of the growing influence and expansion of the geography of BRICS, our team has developed a new format of the sports festival, called BRICS Skate Cup. The main goal of our project is not the victory of one of the participants, but the unification of fans of small wheels from all over the world. Therefore, we can say that the Grand Skate Tour is closer to Olympic values than the Olympics itself,” said Ilya Vdovin.
The festival also includes an entertainment section. Guests of the event will enjoy master classes, premieres of documentaries and videos about action
sports, open lectures with international guests, activities of the BRICS Forum, an exhibition of contemporary artists and photographers and much more.
In addition, in order to attract a wider audience to skateboarding, everyone will be able to experience this sport through the Skater XL video game on a virtual platform.
The Grand Skate Tour is a sporting and
cultural phenomenon that celebrates the creativity and community spirit that skateboarding and roller sports embody. Its goal is to increase the visibility of skateboarding in Russia and around the world and support skateboarders in their pursuit of excellence on the international stage, including on the path to the Olympic Games in Paris in 2024.
