Russia and Comoros to Cooperate to Resolve Conflicts in Africa, Foreign Ministry Says
The Russian Foreign Ministry issued a statement following a meeting between Russia and Comoros on May 16 in Manama on the margins of the 33rd summit of the League of Arab States.
Russia's Special Representative for the Middle East and Africa, Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov, and President of the Comoros Azali Assoumani reaffirmed Moscow's and Moroni's focus on deepening dialogue and coordinating positions at the UN, including on conflict resolution in Africa.
"It also confirmed Moscow's and Moroni's focus on deepening political dialogue and coordinating positions in the UN and other multilateral platforms, in particular on issues of conflict resolution on the African continent and countering modern challenges and threats, based on the principle of "African problems - African solutions," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
The ministry added that the countries also
discussed the main directions of further development of friendly Russian-Comoran relations "with a focus on the tasks of building a mutually beneficial trade and economic partnership, including fisheries, maritime transport, agriculture, energy and personnel training."
Bilateral relations received a strong boost last summer after the Second Russia-Africa Summit was held in St. Petersburg.
It was attended by President Assoumani, the then chairman of the African Union. He
said that Comoros was ready to host the next Russia-Africa Summit, as were many countries on the African continent.
