DOHA (Sputnik) - Qatar Airways acquired a 60% ownership stake in Rwanda's new $1.3 billion international airport in 2019 and has code share agreements with numerous African airlines, including RwandAir.
Qatar will invest in building an African air hub in Rwanda's capital, Kigali, in partnership with Rwandan flag air carrier RwandAir, which will be put into operation in three to four years, Qatar Airways Group CEO Badr Mohammed Al-Meer and RwandAir CEO Yvonne Manzi Makolo have announced.
"We could not have found a better partner and location for creating an air hub in Central Africa than Kigali. We started working together with RwandAir and the Rwandan government to build an airport and the infrastructure needed for the hub," Al-Meer told the Qatar Economic Forum on Wednesday.
The Qatari executive said Qatar Airways is currently in the final stages of investing in a South African air carrier, which will "help make Kigali an inter-African air hub and make RwandAir the leading air carrier on the continent that will connect its different parts."

"The air hub will be an alternative to the already existing tremendous hub in Addis Ababa," the Rwandan executive said.

She said the airport is already being built and will be put into operation in 2027-2028.
