MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The Russian naval aviation destroyed 11 Ukrainian unmanned boats in the Black Sea that were heading toward Crimea, the Russian Defense Ministry said on Thursday.
"At about 14:00 Moscow time [11:00 GMT], unmanned boats of the Ukrainian navy were detected in the western part of the Black Sea, heading towards the Crimean Peninsula. 11 unmanned boats were destroyed from the regular armament of the naval aviation of the navy," the ministry said.
The ministry said in a separate statement later in the day that Russian air defense systems had shot down two Ukrainian rockets over the Belgorod Region.
"On May 16, at about 14:00 Moscow time, the Kiev regime was prevented from carrying out another terrorist attack using the Vilkha multiple launch rocket system [MLRS] on targets on the territory of the Russian Federation. Duty air defense systems destroyed two Vilkha MLRS rockets over the Belgorod Region," the ministry said.
The Belgorod region has been repeatedly targeted by the Ukrainian military since the start of Russia's special military operation in Ukraine.
Russia launched its military operation in Ukraine in February 2022. Russian President Vladimir Putin has said that the objective of the operation is to protect people who were subjected to "Kiev regime's mockery and genocide," adding that Moscow was left with no other choice but to respond to the security risks created.
