Russia to Invite Many Leaders of Global South to BRICS FM's Meeting, BRICS Summit: Russian Acting FM
In January, BRICS, which was established in 2009 and initially united Brazil, Russia, India and China, with South Africa added a year later, expanded to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. On January 1, Russia took over the rotating presidency of the 10-nation BRICS group.
Russia will invite many heads of state and heads of regional organizations of the
Global South to the BRICS Foreign Ministers' Meeting and the BRICS Summit, Russia's Acting Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said.
"One of the most important tasks is to establish a dialogue with those nations that show an interest in getting closer to BRICS, a wide-range interest, from full membership to the establishment of working partnership relations," Lavrov noted.
He added that "there are about 30 such states, and the question of how we can
strengthen the dialogue with them will be among the top political priorities [of Russia's BRICS presidency this year]."
Lavrov highlighted that the participants of last year's BRICS summit in South Africa's city of Johannesburg decided to create a new category – the category of partner countries, which "will largely replace the BRICS+ form of interaction that has existed so far."
The
BRICS Foreign Ministers' Meeting in 2024 will take place in Russia's city of Nizhny Novgorod in June. In October, the city of Kazan will host the organization's summit.
