WASHINGTON (Sputnik) - The United States will finalize the details of the planned orderly withdrawal of its forces from Niger in the coming days, a US defense official told Sputnik on Friday.
"We’ve already announced the intent to withdraw from Niger. We expect meetings in the coming days to work through the logistics of how to conduct that withdrawal in an orderly manner," the official said.
A source in Niger's security services told Sputnik earlier this week, that there is a single location (Airbase 101) where US and Russian military forces are stationed in the African nation. Subsequently, the US military has announced a heightened combat preparedness.
Pentagon spokesman Patrick Ryder stated that there is no communication between the US and Russian forces because they are stationed apart at a military base in Niger.
There are an estimated 1,100 US personnel in Niger. Their pullout was initiated in March after a Nigerien military spokesperson said the country's transitional government, which took power in a coup in July 2023, had terminated the military agreement with the United States with immediate effect, citing the interests of the Nigerien people.
