With the opening of its Lagos (Nigeria) and Nairobi (Kenya) centers in 2019, Microsoft launched its $100-million Africa Development Centers initiative. Since its establishment in 2022, the Nigeria Center has reportedly employed a staff of over 200 engineers, an increase from the initial 120.
Microsoft is shutting down its Africa Development Center in Nigeria, which will result in job losses, the media reported on Wednesday, citing the company's spokesperson.

"Microsoft has decided to close the Africa Development Center in Nigeria, and as a result, some of our employees based in Nigeria will be impacted," the Microsoft spokesperson reportedly said. "Organizational and workforce adjustments are a necessary and regular part of managing our business."

The center, located in Lagos, was established two years ago as an integral part of Microsoft's effort to provide advanced engineering and innovation solutions for the corporation.
However, the company reportedly said it would maintain operations in Nigeria, with a continued focus on prioritizing and investing in key areas of strategic growth.
It is not yet clear how many people will be laid off.

Twitter's Fired Employees in Africa Reached Agreement After Year-Long Negotiations
Hopefully, the employees will receive all their payments related to the layoffs and will not repeat the fate of the African Twitter workers who sued the company for failing to provide them with financial compensation after Elon Musk, who bought the company in 2022, dismissed the workers and promised them all the payments required by law but failed to do so.
However, in late February, the parties reached an agreement after about a year of negotiations.
