79th Victory Day Anniversary: Moscow's Red Square Hosts Military Parade

On May 9, Russia is celebrating the anniversary of the Red Army's victory over Nazi Germany, marking the end of fighting on the Eastern Front during World War II, known in Russia as the Great Patriotic War. It was on May 8, 1945 (or May 9, Moscow time) that Nazi Germany signed its Instrument of Surrender in Berlin.
On Thursday, all of Russia celebrates the 79th anniversary of the Soviet Red Army’s victory over Nazi Germany, a holiday full of pride and mourning, honoring the veterans and their ancestors who brought World War II to an end.
The central event of the holiday is the Victory Parade, which is taking place on Red Square in the Russian capital, Moscow.
This year, more than 9,000 servicemen, 75 units of weapons and equipment, as well as aviation are taking part in the parade.
Russian President Vladimir Putin, visiting Guinea-Bissau President Umaro Sissoco Embaló and Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel are also attending the major event.
