UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) - East Africa has suffered severe flooding during the last rainy season at the end of 2023, which can be linked to climate change causing more intense and frequent extreme weather events.
The UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is worried over the high number of deaths as a result of heavy flooding in places like Burundi, Kenya, Somalia, Tanzania and other parts of East Africa, the UN said in a statement.
“The Secretary-General is deeply distressed to hear of the hundreds of lives lost and many others affected by heavy flooding in Burundi, Kenya, Somalia and Tanzania and other parts of East Africa,” the statement said.
In addition, the statement said that the United Nations stands ready to offer humanitarian assistance.
Guterres also expressed concern over the impact of El Nino-driven extreme weather, which could further devastate communities and undermine their means of living.
