Kenyan President William Ruto visited the flood-hit town of Mai Mahiu in eastern Kenya, where he urged victims to move to safer areas to avoid further loss of life, the presidency said.
He added that a multi-agency team, comprising all security agencies, including the military, has been mobilized to facilitate the evacuation of Kenyans living in such high-risk areas.
"We are asking every Kenyan in such areas to leave because the forecast is that rain will continue and the likelihood of flooding and loss of lives is real. Therefore, we must take pre-emptive action," the president pointed out.
The leader offered condolences to the families who lost their loved ones to the floods in the country and "pledged the full support of the government at all levels."
In a separate statement, the presidency said Ruto convened a special cabinet meeting on Tuesday to discuss additional measures needed to mitigate the impact of the ongoing heavy rains on the lives, property and livelihoods of the people of Kenya.
The Cabinet warned that the situation could become catastrophic as the ground across the country is completely saturated with water, and ordered all citizens living in flood-prone areas to leave within 48 hours.
"The Government has put in place measures to support the evacuation and temporary shelter of those that will be affected by this directive in the event that they require assistance. Further, the Government has identified public spaces in various parts of the country where those affected will be given temporary shelter together with the provision of essential food and non-food supplies," the presidency said.
All those who remain within the areas affected by the directive will be relocated forcibly in the interest of their safety, the government explained.
