MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Since 2012, Mali has experienced persistent conflict between various factions associated with al-Qaeda* and the Daesh* terrorist organizations. Violence also affected the neighboring countries of Burkina Faso and Niger.
The Malian military eliminated a senior leader of the Daesh (IS) in the Greater Sahara terrorist group, Abou Houzeifa, who was wanted by the United States for his alleged role in the 2017 attack in Niger that killed American soldiers, the Malian armed forces said.
" … The death of Abou Houzeifa, known as Hugo, a foreign terrorist, is confirmed ... The US State Department has valued his head at ... $5 million for responsibility for the deaths of members of US Special Forces in Tongo Tongo, Niger, in October 2017," the armed forces said on X.
