The United Nations has announced the allocation of $5.5 million to help Zambia cope with the effects of an unprecedented drought, Xinhua news agency reported, citing the UN office in Lusaka.The funds will be used to provide food aid, safe drinking water and medical services in the affected areas.In February this year, Zambia declared a national disaster due to a drought that affected 84 of the country's 116 districts.Earlier, Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema called on the global community to provide financial assistance to the African country due to the severe drought. According to him, the country has only $51 million of the $940 million needed to combat the effects of dehydration and heat.According to the president, the lack of rain has led to the loss of crops. More than 6 million people are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance.
