The US approval rating in Africa may have declined because Washington attaches conditions to its aid to countries on the continent tied to issues of human rights and democracy, while Africa's engagement with Russia and China is unconditional, Dr. Nicodemus Minde, Researcher at the Institute for Security Studies, Nairobi, told Sputnik Africa. The analyst added that the decline of US ratings in Africa is linked to the continent's growing approval of Moscow and Beijing. China has made significant inroads into Africa in critical areas, including infrastructure, business, and manufacturing, while Russia has also had great influence on the continent in recent years through a number of diplomatic and multilateral engagements with the continent, including hosting the Russia-Africa summits, Minde argued.Although the US, like China and Russia, never colonized the continent, it had a very close relationship with the "conceptual West," including the colonial masters, the expert said. During the Cold War, some African countries sided with the US and its allies, while others sided with the "conceptual East," which included Russia and China, he added. For example, the expert said that historical factors such as "the neocolonial or imperial nature of the relationship between the West" contributed to coups in a number of African countries, such as Niger.Speaking on current geopolitical trends, he noted the rise of multipolarity with the new formation of new alliances such as BRICS and its expansion, as well as the rise of mid-range powers that are changing the global geopolitical dynamics.

What's Behind Falling US Approval in Africa and Rising Ratings of Russia and China?
17:56 25.04.2024 (Updated: 18:12 25.04.2024) This week, the US polling agency Gallup released approval ratings in Africa for some of the major powers, showing that the US approval rating in Africa has fallen to 56%, China is 2% ahead of the US, and 8% more Africans approve of Russia's leadership than a year ago. Sputnik Africa asked an analyst to shed light on the reasons behind such trends.
"It [the US] is always perceived as this marauding power that is telling Africa what to do as opposed to China and Russia, where there are a lot of mutual engagements; of course, probably China and Russia still have an upper hand. But when they're interacting, we see there's some sort of mutuality in terms of engagement, almost on an equal basis and listening, as opposed to just dictating," he explained.
The analyst added that the decline of US ratings in Africa
is linked to the continent's growing approval of Moscow and Beijing. China has made significant inroads into Africa in critical areas, including infrastructure, business, and manufacturing, while Russia has also had great influence on the continent in recent years through a number of diplomatic and multilateral engagements with the continent, including hosting the Russia-Africa summits, Minde argued.
Although the US, like China and Russia,
never colonized the continent, it had a very close relationship with the "conceptual West," including the colonial masters, the expert said. During the Cold War, some African countries sided with the US and its allies, while others sided with the "conceptual East," which included Russia and China, he added.
"So all these historical factors continue to shape our perception," Minde pointed out.
For example, the expert said that historical factors such as "the neocolonial or imperial nature of the relationship between the West" contributed
to coups in a number of African countries, such as Niger.
"And if you look at the factors that attributed to the rise of military coups in the Sahel and West Africa in general, they are actually seen as a form of revolt against these neocolonial entities and France in particular," he stressed.
Speaking on current geopolitical trends, he noted the rise of multipolarity with the new formation of new alliances such as BRICS and its expansion, as well as the rise of mid-range powers that are changing the global geopolitical dynamics.
