DOHA (Sputnik) - Yemen's Houthi rebels vowed last November to attack any ships associated with Israel until it halts military actions in Gaza, effectively blocking commercial navigation in the Bab al-Mandab Strait.
Yemen's Ansar Allah movement, also known as Houthis, will continue to attack ships associated with Israel and military operations against it until the end of Israeli military operations in the Gaza Strip and the lifting of the blockade on this enclave, Houthi political office member Hezam al-Asad told Sputnik on Wednesday.

"Yemen's military operations are linked to the continuation of US-backed Israeli aggression and the blockade of our people in the Gaza Strip, and will continue until their end. In addition, attacks on US and UK ships will continue as a legal and guaranteed right to respond to US-UK attacks on Yemen," al-Asad said when asked if the Houthis will act in concert with Iran against Israel and stop shelling its territory if Iran refrains from further actions.

Houthi rebels said last November they would attack Israeli-linked ships passing through the Red Sea in retaliation for the Israeli invasion of the Gaza Strip. They have since launched dozens of attacks on ships in the region, prompting retaliatory airstrikes from the UK and the US.
This led the US and the European Union to announce a multinational operation to secure navigation in the Red Sea. US and UK forces have launched numerous strikes against Houthi positions in a bid to degrade their ability to target commercial vessels.
