Egypt Feels Impact of Anti-Russia Sanctions But Sees Ways to Address It: Finance Minister
WASHINGTON (Sputnik) - Egypt sometimes feels the impact of anti-Russia sanctions, but the two countries see how to address the situation together, Egyptian Finance Minister Mohamed Maait told Sputnik.
When asked whether Egypt sees any impact of the anti-Russia sanctions on its cooperation with Russia, Maait
said, "Sometimes, yes."
"But we see how to address it together," Maait said on the sidelines of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank Spring meetings in Washington.
The United States and other countries have imposed comprehensive sanctions on Russia in response to Moscow's special military operation in Ukraine, including restrictions on the country's financial and energy sectors.
Russian officials have said the sanctions have failed despite the attempts by the collective West to contain and weaken the country’s economy.
Minister Maait also said that the use of Russia's Mir payment system
is currently being discussed with the Central Bank of Egypt.
"This is discussed with the Central Bank of Egypt. I know it, but it is discussed with the Central Bank of Egypt," Maait said on the sidelines of the IMF/World Bank Spring meetings in Washington DC. "I'm not following, but I know that it is discussed with the Central Bank of Egypt."
Mir payment system cards are now accepted by partner banks in Abkhazia, Armenia, Belarus, Vietnam, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, South Korea, and South Ossetia. Iran, Indonesia, Myanmar, Thailand, India, Venezuela, Mauritius, Nigeria, and Ethiopia have also shown interest in connecting the Mir cards to their systems.
