Gunmen Kill 12 People in Attack on Village in Southeastern Central African Republic
BANGUI (Sputnik) - The Central African Republic faced a security crisis after a 2013 coup, followed by clashed between Muslim-majority Seleka and Christian Anti-Balaka fighters. Despite a peace agreement, signed in 2019 between the CAR President and leaders of 14 rebel groups, violence resumed after the 2020 presidential election.
At least 12 people were killed in an attack by armed men on a village in the southeast of the Central African Republic (CAR), the head of the Mbomou prefecture, Pierrette Benguere, told Sputnik.
"I was in a convoy guarded by UN peacekeepers when we arrived at the scene of the fire. We learned that a local resident went to get bamboo and was shot. Someone alerted the village and the villagers ran away. Then armed men came, they set fire to the houses and killed those who did not have time to escape [...] As a result, 12 [people were] killed and 9 houses were burned," Benguere said.
The massacre took place in the village, located 30 kilometers from the city of Bakouma. She called on the government to increase the number of military personnel.
