According to the Association of Fast Food and Confectioners of Nigeria, the Nigerian food industry is valued at more than N1 trillion (about $796 million) and is one of the best-performing in the country.
Chicken Republic, one of the pioneers of Nigeria's quick-service restaurant sector, had the highest sales last year among its competitors despite rising inflation that reduced consumers' purchasing power, the local media reported.
According to the BusinessDay's review of the most recent foodservice statistics from global market research firm Euromonitor International, Chicken Republic had the greatest sales value at N60.9 billion (more than $47 million), followed by Sweet Sensation at N4.58 billion (approx. $3.5 million) and Mr. Bigg's at N2.68 billion (about $2 million).
Such a success can be attributed to the company’s deals and promotions, as well as partnership with the Glovo app for more efficient food delivery, the report said, citing Thomas Verryn, senior research manager at Euromonitor International. Moreover, Chicken Republic continues to expand its network of restaurants.

Time to Chicken Out? Only 10% of The Poultry in Uganda is Reportedly Antibiotics-Free
Professor of Marketing and Faculty Director at Lagos Business School, Uchenna Uzo, also cited Chicken Republic's food quality, taste and variety as the reasons for its more than thirteen-fold lead over its nearest competitor.
“Remember that they are positioning themselves as chicken experts. And in terms of understanding the Nigerian palette, they have been consistent in ensuring that in the different places where they serve, people are having the same taste and experience,” he said, as cited by the report.
The Nigerian fast-food company and franchise known for its chicken specialties, particularly fried chicken, was launched 20 years ago. It has since expanded to more than 150 locations throughout Nigeria and Ghana.
While many people find fried chicken delicious, it can also pose a threat as the poultry might contain antibiotics. A month ago, the World Animal Protection, an international animal welfare organization, revealed that 90% of chicken meat in Uganda contains antibiotics and warned Ugandans to avoid purchasing poultry with the medications since it can lead to the spread of undetected diseases in people.
