Last month, Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni praised the African chief justices for their efforts to return to resolving conflicts in accordance with African traditions and customs, as it involves mediation and reconciliation, promotes truth-telling, unlike the existing formal legal system, the local media reported.
Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni has
commended religious leaders for their efforts in leading the battle against corruption and urged them to continue the good work as corruption hinders the country's development.
"I was very happy to hear the religious leaders’ message of condemning corruption. Keep it up. The corrupt are parasites that delay and undermine our transformation efforts," the president
wrote on X on Sunday.
He, however, noted that his political party National Resistance Movement (NRM) was aware of this issue "from the very beginning" and has been fighting it.
"However, I would like to inform the religious leaders that from the very beginning, the NRM was conscious of this problem. Indeed, in the 1960s, I was involved in fighting the corruption of the chiefs, the teachers misusing (defiling) school girls, vets and medical staff stealing government drugs, etc.," Museveni continued.
He also noted that the government, by providing the people, especially the victims of
corruption, the ability to choose their own leaders, gave them more power. He singled out the corruption victims because resources and money are either taken from them or they are coerced into paying bribes.
Furthermore, the Ugandan leader addressed
land grabbing, which is also a corruption issue that has been "intensifying and spreading throughout the country," according to a
study done by the Uganda's non-governmental organization National Association of Professional Environmentalists.
"Land grabbing is part of the corruption. The land grabbing is not happening on the moon. It is happening in a village, a parish, a sub-county, a constituency, a district, etc. There are structures – administrative, popular (elected), political [..], security [..], and religious. All these have information that could help with these problems," the head of state added.
The East African country plans to continue its fight against corruption also in the army. New chief of the Uganda Peoples' Defense Forces, Museveni's son
Muhoozi Kainerugaba, vowed to combat "the evils of corruption and mismanagement of resources" inside the armed forces.
